Emerging from a disused site with an unclear local context, the Donald Street Apartments will craft a new, striking typology within the rapidly densifying business fringe in Footscray. The construction system for this project is both simple and attractive, melding simple and pragmatic building technique with considered use of site constraints.
This project dispenses with the typical site edge concern of set back through a folding facade that occupies this interim zone. This cheaper system is clad over a concrete inner living shell and punctured at key moments. This application allows the future removal of the facade for alternative purpose, as well as the seclusion of guttering and services, and use as an effective thermal barrier.
The Donald Street Apartments will provide an arresting addition to the streetscape, and incorporate 8 modularly planned 1 bedroom apartments and generous ground floor retail tenancies.
