The Leeds Street Apartments will transform an unused commercial building in the heart of the Footscray business zone into an activated, thriving residential hub. External work for this project is limited to key incisions, manipulations and additions to the existing building form: a series of angled shades protrude beyond the building envelope, marking the intent of the internal program, providing a sense of identity and forming an effective screen for the future residents.
This project re-inhabits an existing, generic concrete building. With a largely material-orientated design focus, it aims to transform it into 10 1 bedroom and studio apartments with a clean, efficient spatial configuration and cost-effective, modular construction systems.
With a minimum of time from design to construction, this project encapsulates the possibilities of rapid reuse of existing building infrastructure around the urban fringe.
